What is shangchuan island?

Shangchuan Island is an island located in the Guangdong Province of China. It is situated in the Pearl River estuary, about 10 kilometers southwest of the city of Zhuhai. The island covers an area of approximately 35 square kilometers and has a population of around 30,000 people.

The island's history can be traced back to the Song Dynasty (960-1279) when it was used as a military base. During the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644), the island was developed into a commercial port due to its strategic location.

Shangchuan Island is known for its beautiful scenery and cultural heritage. The island has several attractions such as the Shangchuan Island Martyrs Cemetery, which is a memorial for the 155 Portuguese soldiers who died on the island in the 16th century. The island also has several temples, including the Tianhou Temple and the Jinshan Temple.

The island is accessible by ferry from Zhuhai, which takes around 30 minutes. It is a popular destination for tourists due to its proximity to Zhuhai and the nearby gambling destination of Macau.
